SF State Foundation News: A monthly newsletter for the board of directors

DECEMBER 2015
FROM THE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

Photos from dedication of the George and Judy Marcus Athletics Performance Center, including ribbon cutting and students enjoying the facility

Just before this month’s meeting of the Foundation board of directors, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially inaugurate the George and Judy Marcus Athletics Performance Center. The event provided an opportunity to publicly acknowledge alums George and Judy Marcus, whose generous support made this new training facility possible. Many grateful student athletes attended the ribbon cutting to express their excitement and appreciation to Judy Marcus personally as they toured the center. Judy, meanwhile, spoke movingly to the students about her days at SF State and of her joy in being able to give back to the school and programs that mean so much to her.

This inspiring event reminded me yet again of the wonderful work all of us associated with the SF State Foundation do to connect joyful donors with the people and programs they admire and wish to support. Thank you once again for everything you do to create joy in our community. I wish you the very best during this holiday season.

SF State Foundation President

HONORING OUR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AND DONORS

Scholarship awards transform the lives of students. Generous scholarships free students from the burdens of further debt, allow them to pursue research and professional development and pave the way to remarkable academic achievements. These awards open doors to bright futures and are made possible by the vision of philanthropic donors to the University. At our annual Scholarship Recognition Dinner, held this year on December 1, we celebrated many of the students benefiting from the 1,155 scholarships SF State is able to offer as well as the committed group of alumni, parents, faculty, and friends who make these awards possible through their generous support.

PRESIDENT'S DINNER AND ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

SF State inducted five alumni into the Alumni Hall of Fame at this year’s President’s Dinner and Alumni Hall of Fame celebration. The dinner, held at the Ritz Carlton on November 6, drew more than 400 faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends – the largest attendance ever for this annual event. Two alumnae – retired Air Force Major General Barbara Lavis Brannon and human rights activist Mu Sochua – were honored as 2015 Alumnae of the Year. Kevin Anderson, athletic director at the University of Maryland; Sherry M. Hirota, CEO of Asian Health Services; and Daniel Sullivan, renowned theater director; were also inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame.
